DEVOTE A MINUTE DAILY TO EDUCATE YOUTH ON DRUG ABUSE – NIMAKO-YAMOAH URGES GHANAIAN.

Percy Nimako-Yamoah, the Municipal Director of the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development at the Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly, has issued a passionate appeal to traditional authorities, heads of faith-based organisations, heads of educational institutions, parents, guardians, and the general public to dedicate just a minute of their time each day to raise awareness about drug abuse and its dangers to the youth.

Speaking to the press on the sidelines of the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, observed under the theme “World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses,” Mr. Nimako-Yamoah appealed to parents to stay closely involved with their children, advising them to monitor their movements, speak freely with them, and help them adopt positive, healthy habits.

He emphasised that stopping young people from taking up drugs in the first place is not only more effective but also far more affordable than funding rehabilitation programmes after the damage is done. Observing the worrying direction of current trends, he expressed regret over the prevalence of substance misuse involving opioids, popularly known as red, alcohol, cannabis, codeine-based syrups, and other illegal drugs among the youth. He pointed out that this development is closely linked to high school dropouts, increased crime rates, and a rise in mental health issues.

Wrapping up his submission, he charged the youth to remain steadfast in protecting their future, warning them not to let substance abuse steal the opportunities that lie ahead.
