The Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly has provided 50 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) with entrepreneurial support equipment to help them build sustainable livelihoods and achieve economic independence.
The items, funded through the Disability Fund and distributed by the Assembly’s Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, included chest freezers, industrial and manual sewing machines, ovens, popcorn makers, hair dryers, wax prints, groceries, palm fruits and oil, vegetable oil, maize, groundnuts, gari, and bags of charcoal.
Presenting the start-up tools at a ceremony held at the New Tafo funeral grounds, Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Charles Darko Yeboah, commended the Mahama-led administration for increasing the Disability Fund allocation from three to five percent of the Assembly Common Fund. He noted that the enhanced allocation would significantly expand the programme’s reach, ensuring that more PWDs benefit from the initiative in the coming years.
Hon. Darko Yeboah urged beneficiaries to put the income-generating items to proper use and adhere to the intended purpose of the support. He also called on unregistered PWDs to take the necessary steps to enrol, adding that the Assembly would continue with community sensitisation campaigns to educate residents on the registration process and encourage broader participation.
The MCE further appealed to the public to stop hiding relatives with disabilities, especially children. He advised that such children be enrolled in the OPASS special school, stressing that with proper care and attention, they had the potential to become future leaders.
In response, the beneficiaries expressed profound gratitude to the Assembly and government for the continuous support, noting that the livelihood resources would significantly improve their businesses and overall well-being.
